We have created a file of all counties and the counties which they share a common boundary (contiguous counties), including if the shared boundary is a waterway. This is a current contiguous county data file.

The data fields are as follows:

• State abbreviation and FIPS code.
• County FIPS code and county name.
• For each bordering county it will also have the above fields.

The file can be used in researching adjacent counties and communities. It has been used in medical research, health insurance research and may be used in medicare / medicaid research. Used by colleges and universities in analysis of adjoining counties.

We found this file invaluable in our data validation with our Multiple Counties per ZIP product. We found out that a lot of ZIPs cross state lines and this significantly improved our product.
